Qatar Steel participated in the 9th edition of Project Qatar 2012, held at Doha Exhibition Center from 30th April – 3rd May, 2012, under the auspices of HE Sheikh Hamad Bin Jassim Bin Jabor Al-Thani, Prime Minister and Foreign Minister. “Project Qatar 2012” is Qatar’s most important leading International Trade Exhibition for Constructions, Building Materials, Equipment and Technology, and it attracted more than 2000 exhibitors from 48 countries. In culmination of the persistent efforts to protect the environment, and recycle the industrial wastes,resulted from steel manufacturing, for better reuse and reinvestment, and within the framework of consolidating and strengthening the co-operation ties between Qatar Steel and the private sector, Qatar Steel has signed a sale and recycling slag contract with Slag Aggregate Producer (S.A.P), located in Doha. The sale contract was signed by Mr. Ali Bin Hassan Al-Murakhi, Director and General Manager of Qatar Steel, and Sheikh Khaled Bin Hamad Bin Jassim Al-Thani, Managing Director of SAP. High officials of both sides attended the signing ceremony. As per this contract, Qatar Steel shall sell to SAP one million ton of slag as steel wastes. SAP will process, recover the scrap and return it to Qatar Steel to re-use it in their industry. The ensuing aggregate will be utilized in the constructions and infrastructure works. To commemorate the completion of the 6- months training program given by Qatar Steel to the second batch of Saudi South Steel trainees, a celebration was held at Doha Mariette Hotel, with the attendance of HE Mr. Hindi Bin Nayef Bin Humaid, Advisor of the Embassy of Saudi Arabia in the State of Qatar. In Support of the Emiri Decree No. (80), passed by HH Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani, for assigning the second Tuesday of every February as a National Sports Day, Qatar Steel, in partnership and cooperation with MIC management, organized today a sports program to celebrate this event. The company has invited all staff and their families to attend and take part in different sports activities planned to be held in Mesaeed, on the sports day, including football, basketball, handball, volleyball, cricket, tennis, rugby, golf, short-distance running races. Qatar Steel’s Board of Directors has recently approved to increase the company’s stake in South Steel of Saudi Arabia, from 20.9% to 29.74% (by additional 9%), amounting to QS 90 million Saudi Riyals. South Steel, located in Jazan Economic Area in Saudi Arabia, consists of an integrated Steel melting complex, with a capacity of 1 million MTPA of Steel billets and 500,000 MTPA of Steel reinforcement bars. South Steel is currently meeting the requirements of local Saudi markets, and particularly the South Area. The surplus production is marketed to other areas inside Saudi Arabia and the neighboring markets of Yemen and Africa. In line with its ambitious vision to be universally recognized as a leading and constantly growing force in the steel industry of the region, and in light of its excellent business relations with local financial institutions, Qatar Steel, a wholly owned subsidiary of Industries Qatar (IQ), has signed a subordinated loan facility agreement for a medium-term loan facility of USD 250 million (QAR 912.5 million), with a syndicate of two banks; the International Bank of Qatar (IBQ) and the Union National Bank (UNB). IBQ, the facility agent, will provide USD 150 million (QAR 547.5 million) of the project’s cost with UNB funding the remaining balance of USD100 (QAR 365 million). In support of the community’s environmental activities, Qatar Steel organized on 19/11/2011 a beach cleaning drive in Al-Wakra, in cooperation with Al Wakra Municipality. About 150 employees from the company have volunteered to participate in this event, which was held under the slogan “preserving the environment is one of our most important goals.” Al Qadisiya Model local primary school for boys has joined Qatar Steel in this drive, with about 50 volunteers. Qatar Steel’s environmental policy aims at preserving the environment and maintaining its cleanliness. As a rule, it communicates with various environmental bodies and authorities, to develop an environmental awareness culture in the society, and to warn all the individuals of the dangers of waste dumps in the coastal areas.
