Qatar Steel, the leading steel company in the region, participated in the Arab Steel Summit 2013 (held from 26th -28th Oct. 2013 at Grand Hyatt Hotel in Dubai), as Platinum Sponsor and the sole sponsor for the 1st day dinner in honour of the invited guests. The Arab Steel Summit is organized every year in the Arabian countries. The Summit attracted leading Steel companies from 33 countries regionally and overseas. Delegates presented papers in the summit focusing on key issues and updates on steel industry. Qatar Steel also took part in the World Steel Exhibition, held concurrently with the event under the patronage of Ministry of Economy UAE. In line with its constant commitment to the community, Qatar Steel organized a blood donation drive in its premises in Mesaieed, in coordination with Hamad Medical Corporation’s mobile Blood Transfusion Unit. Employees from various departments showed good response and high awareness about the importance of the blood donation drive and the positive impact on the society. As a rule, PR & Communications Dept. in Qatar Steel organizes blood donations drive, believing that it is an inspiring, rich and rewarding opportunity for our employees to show their support for their community, through participation in a team-focused activity. As part of its corporate social responsibility, and in support of community activities, PR & Communications team in Qatar Steel paid a visit to some organizations and institutions in the country, such as Dreema, General Authority for Minors Affairs, Qatar Society for Rehabilitation of Special Needs and some other charitable organizations. The aim of the visit is to share them their celebrations of Garangaou traditional event, which is celebrated on the eve of 15th Ramadan every year. Garangaou bags with some nuts were distributed to children. This initiative comes in the framework of reviving Qatar’s old customs and traditions that aim at making children happy and joyful. “Garangaou” is locally celebrated by children, wearing bright clothes, wandering in streets and singing special popular songs. No doubt that Garangaou celebration is a big fun not only for children, but for parents as well.

At the invitation of Qatar Steel, the Board of Directors of Arab Iron and Steel Union (AISU) held its regular session meeting No. 107, and its General Assembly’s regular session meeting No. 46, on 19th and 20th May, 2013, at the Marriott Hotel in Doha. Representatives of 50 steel companies from 16 Arab countries, who are members of the Union’s Board of Directors, attended the meetings. The Agenda of Union’s Board Meeting included a review of the General Secretary’s report, on the Union’s activities and the most important updates with respect to  Arab and world steel industry. The report also included the decisions and recommendations made by the Board of Directors at its sessions 105 and 106, and the General Assembly at its 44th and 45th regular sessions, held in Cairo-Arab Republic of Egypt. Qatar Steel participated in Project Qatar 2013, which was held from May 6 – 9, at the Doha Exhibition Center, under the patronage of HE Sheikh Jassim Bin Abdulaziz Bin Jassim Bin Hamad al-Thani, Minister of Business and Trade. Project Qatar 2013 aims to explore key investment opportunities in construction sector, and to provide a strategic and dynamic platform for the construction industry’s key players and decision makers to discuss current trends and issues, showcase products and services and reinforce business ties between buyers and sellers. As part of its constant initiatives to extend its international network, promote its brand image, and further enhance its trade and economic relations, Qatar Steel participated in 8th World Chambers Congress, which was held from 22-25 April, 2013, at Qatar National Conventions Center. The year’s biggest international gathering of chamber and business leaders was held under the theme “Opportunities for all”, and it was hosted by the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), in partnership with the Qatar Chamber. The congress is held regularly every two years in a different region of the world, but this year it is held for the first time in the Middle East. The World Chambers Congress brought together chambers from over 100 countries and key policy makers. In compliance with its Qatarization plan, and in line with its strategy to attract Qatari manpower to join the company, Qatar Steel participated in Qatar Independent Technical School’s career fair. Leading Industrial companies along with a number of local universities and colleges also took part in the event. This initiative comes within the framework of continual cooperation existing between Qatar Steel and QITS, aiming at familiarizing Qatari graduates with job opportunities available at the company’s various departments, and to encourage them to start their careers at the company in the future. In pursuit of its objective to implement the quality Qatarization policy endorsed by the State of Qatar, Qatar Steel effectively participated in Qatar’s Career Fair, inaugurated by HH Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani, Heir Apparent, from 1-6 April 2013, at Qatar Conventions Centre. The six day event was organized by Qatar Foundation, Qatar Petroleum, Qatar University and Ministry of Labor. Qatar Steel was inspired by the main vision and mission of the organizers of Career fair, which lie in encouraging fresh national graduates to join the industrial sector, offering job opportunities to highly motivated and promising people, and providing them with all required training in order to get them qualified for their prospective careers. As part of its marketing strategy to enhance its cooperation ties with its local and regional accredited traders, Qatar Steel hosted its Traders’ 10th Annual Gathering. An official ceremony was held at St. Regis Hotel –Qatar, in honor of all Qatar Steel’s traders, and in recognition and appreciation of their devoted efforts. The ceremony was attended by a large number of traders and distributers, both locally and regionally. Qatar Steel officials, on top of them were Mr. Ali Bin Hasan Al-Muraikhi, Director General Manager of Qatar Steel, division and department managers, senior employees, in addition to other dignitaries and high ranking officials. Doha- Qatar The governments of Qatar and Algeria have decided to enter into a joint venture, for the construction of a steel complex in Algeria, at the industrial Area of Bellara, (Jijel). The planned steel complex will have a total production capacity of 4 million tons per year, while it is designed to produce 2 million tons of steel rebars in its first phase.  (1,5 MT of steel rebars & 500,000 Tons of Wiring rod,) to meet the requirements of the local market, on a priority basis. The joint venture was signed by the two sides on 7th Jan. 2013, while the shareholders’ agreement was signed on 24th March, 2013, for the construction and operation of the steel complex. Algeria (represented by Sider Co. & National Investment Fund) will hold 51% stake, while Qatar Steel International will hold the remaining 49% (represented by Qatar Steel 24,5%, and Qatar Mining 24,5%).
